Lonesome Dove (1989) follows retired Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call as they embark on a dangerous cattle drive from Texas to Montana. They gather a group of cowboys and set off on their journey, facing the harsh frontier.

Along the way, they encounter outlaws, Native American attacks, and personal struggles. Gus reunites with his lost love, Clara, while Call struggles with his sense of duty and leadership. The groupβs loyalty is tested as tragedies unfold.

Gus is severely wounded and refuses to have his leg amputated, ultimately passing away. He asks Call to bury him in Texas, forcing Call to complete the journey alone.
